Not sure you are ready to adopt? Becoming a foster family is easy! Hounds of the Heartland would not exist if it wasn’t for our dedicated foster families. You will be asked to teach the greyhound how to live in a home so when they are placed with a potential adopting family they can make a smooth transition. The best part is—it won’t cost you a thing! HoH pays for and supplies everything you will need: food, medical care, vet bills, supplies, crate, etc. All you need to provide is love and care.
Most of our greyhounds that come from the farm or track have never been inside a home before. You can introduce them to slick floors, stairs, glass doors, ceiling fans, and more. Greyhounds are accustomed to being crated, so most retired racing greyhounds are virtually housebroken. We ask that you do not allow your foster dogs on the furniture, as their adoptive family may not want them to come with that habit. We also typically ask you to crate your foster dog (crate is provided) and let the adoptive family choose whether or not they want to eliminate the crating. These are all very easy things to accomplish and you will be surprised at how rewarding it is! If you are interested in becoming a foster family for a greyhound in need, please fill out an application and indicate you are interested in fostering. Thank you!
